This week there was a post on Viva San Carlos, the local forum, about an earlybird produce market in Guaymas, 20 minutes from here. I persuaded my Guaymas friend Ale to join me and we checked it out, mostly out of curiosity. It's two blocks off 20th Street, a stone's throw from the mercado. But the catch is that it's open from 5-7am.
I'm not sure I'd be willing to get up at 5 on a regular basis to stock up on veggies and fruit, but it might be worth the effort: this produce was so fresh, not at all picked-over, and cheap! I got all this for eighty pesos, or $6.03 at today's exchange rate. I have to add to that the cost of gas, but I drive a frugal car and anyway, this was research. Next time I'll do more advance planning and buy for the whole week.
Other options range from tianguis three times a week in Guaymas, Tony's veggie stand 11am-6pm every day but Sunday, the big Ley supermarket, or the smaller markets here in San Carlos. But even without crunching the numbers to compare them item by item, I'm convinced this early street market is the best deal yet. No crowds, friendly service and refreshing cool morning breezes (Reason #2). And I can always go home and have a nap.

yummy beets are a favorite of ours. We had some last night with a pea and chicken salad. Do you peel yours? we dont, it is just so messy. I just scrub them to death, rub with olive oil salt and pepper and roast in foil.
I am supposed to be getting up at 6 to take Jiggs for a walk before the sun is up. Buying vegetables and fruit would fit right in -- if we had any such thing here in our tiny village.
C & K - Sounds good, and pretty easy. Think I'll try that.
Steve - When we were in Barra I was curious just where the stores and restaurants get their produce. I wonder if there is just such a market somewhere; surely they don't all go to Manzanillo. One person I can think of to ask is Wendy at Octopus's Garden in Barra (he speaks English).
The Guaymas market was tiny: just a few trucks parked on a side street, with boxes laid out on the curb, so they can sweep it all up in a matter of minutes at 7am.
reminds me of the vegetable coops of the 70's when we would go out to the produce mkts at 4:30 AM and buy for 12 families. Every family chipped in $5 and it was enough produce for a family for 2 weeks! Sure miss those days. The most fun part was trying things you wouldn't have bought yourself.
This post is timely for me. I just made a commitment to do more shopping in the mercados instead of Mega. I realize I've been writing about the local markets but I haven't really been using them.
I love getting up early, I may try heading down to the Dallas Farmer's Mkt once I'm out for the summer.
Babs - Well, $5 doesn't buy as much, even in Mexico, as it used to.
John - They can be a bit overwhelming. Take a list.
Jomamma - If they're anything like the ones in San Francisco, they'll be a smorgasbord of gourmet goodies. See advice to John.
It was fun getting up that early. I haven´t done that since I lived with my mom and we traveled to Nogales first thing in the morning (6 am)
The weater was great! I wish I had the discipline to do that more often to go to a gym or walk the dogs or just go jogging.
Ulisses was pacently surprise! We never have that much fruit and veggies at once in the house.
