A new Arizona law, SB 1070, requires police officers to detain anyone they suspect of being in the US illegally, and makes it a misdemeanor to be without proper identification papers when detained by law enforcers.
AZ governor Janet Brewer then followed up this week by signing a bill banning ethnic studies, specifically classes designed for students of particular ethnic groups.

Protests from San Francisco to Boston, include most recently a boycott by Los Angeles city council on business with Arizona. Concerned about the economic fallout, both Tucson and Flagstaff city councils are suing the state. But at the same time nine other state legislatures are considering similar laws cracking down on illegal immigrants.
And in downtown Guaymas this banner has been displayed by PAN, one of the two major political parties, calling for Guaymas residents not to visit Arizona, and to rebuff the anti-immigration law.

I'll have to study this one a bit more. Here in North Texas we have had our own share of anti-illegals campaigns. I don't think checking people's credentials is a bad thing, but they shouldn't just single out the Hispanics. We have State funded programs (PreK -6th gr) for Spanish speaking students who wish to learn in Spanish at the same time they are learning in English. We also have PreKindergarten classes for students who speak English as a second language and wish to learn English. We are not allowed to single students out because they are illegal aliens or don't have a US birth certificate. But this does create problems when a US citizen can't get into the class because it's full. Where we have 2 Bilingual (Spanish) PreK classes we have 8 ESL (English) classes. These consist of any other non-Hispanic speaking culture, Asian, Middle-eastern, European. We shouldn't just single out the Hispanics... WE should all have our I.D.s ready to show. Everyone can fall into this profile.... the Hispanic Moms at our school refer to me as 'The Mexican Lady in the Office'.... little do they know the Hispanic blood was bread out of my genes looong time ago, just because the name sounds Mexican doesn't mean it is. Besides, I doubt our country would be attacked by terrorist from Mexico.
Good, hit em in their pocketbook. It is so sad that it has come to this in the USA - a NATION of immigrants........truly
It's not an anti-immigration law.
It's an anti-illegal immigration law.
I agree, if any IDs are going to be checked, all IDs should be checked and law abiding citizens given preference for US tax funded social services.
Being a libertarian I do not want to live in a place where I have to provide ID at the bequest of an official unless I have given them probable cause to believe I have done something wrong - and probable cause will not be the color of one's skin.
There are other ways to enforce people's rights to services and to work in my opinion.
Why are so many willing to give up their freedom as written in the Constitution before seeking out other solutions - probably because they are brain dead.
How many of the people who are openly against AZ's new law aka an unenforced Federal law live in a state that deals with hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants? Expats who live in Mexico.
Were you allowed to move to Mexico without proof of income?
Without filling out tons of paperwork?
Without approval of the government?
The USA expects the same thing, so does Canada. We are enforcing this law at our borders. It's not about race it's about ensuring the safety of our citizens! There are many who come to our country through the Mexico/USA border who come to do harm to our citizens. We want our government to protect us. I live near the border. I have had many illegals come through here who have obvious prison tats on them. I try not to make contact but if they ask for water or food I will not turn them away. I will call the Border Patrol because that is my job as a citizen of this country.
